In a blog post on Thursday, Skype's Product Manager Lara Kingwell announced the Skype 2.19 update for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1.
The update includes several new features, including more language support, improved notifications, and Cortana integration. The language support has increased from 19 to 51 languages. In addition, the update allows users to edit their last sent message after it has been sent after users requested this feature. "We're always looking to improve your experience on Skype and pay close attention to your feedback," wrote Kingwell. Skype Notifications are now compatible with the pull-down Notification Center in Windows Phone 8.1, making it easier to access conversations, and push notifications have been improved. As usual, there are general bug fixes and other, less notable, improvements.
The Cortana update is only available for Windows Phone 8.1 devices in the United States. With Cortana, users can say something like, "Skype get [insert name here] on the screen" to start a Skype video and audio call. Earlier this month, Windows Phone Group Program Manager, Marcus Ash, tweeted that Microsoft was set to roll out Cortana to Windows 8.1 devices in China and the UK. There is still no update on when Cortana will actually roll out for these devices. Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that its Skype group video calling would no longer require a subscription in an attempt to compete with rival Google's Hangouts service. Previously, group calling required a $9.99 per month subscription for a premium account. Free group chat is currently available through Windows desktop, Mac, and Xbox One though the feature is not available on Windows Phone devices at this time. The Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 update is available now from the Windows Phone Store.
